Sapkowski himself has ambivalent feelings toward the games. The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt (Image credit: CD Projekt) I recommend reading "Season of Storms" last, but to each his own. The characters for this framing story first show up in "The Lady of the Lake." I'm not sure any of this material spoils the story, but it might leave readers scratching their heads until five books later. You see, while "Season of Storms" bridges the gap between the first two books, it also has a framing story, which takes place hundreds of years later. In fact, most of the action in the book occurs between "The Last Wish" and "Sword of Destiny." Does that mean that "Season of Storms" should be your second book? Well, maybe. The only wrinkle in the formula is "Season of Storms." While the novel is technically the eighth book in The Witcher series, it doesn't take place last in the chronology. Don't skip any they're all good, and they all contain valuable plot information. The first two books are short story collections, while the latter five are novels, but they all fit together to tell a complete narrative in a linear fashion. Ciri's adventures, and Geralt's quest to keep her safe, are mainly the story of the rest of the series. But around the end of the second book, things start to shift, as Geralt claims responsibility for a royal child named Ciri.

Seemingly not realizing how important both she and her abilities are to the rest of the world, Geralt may be Ciri's only hope to help her find her true destiny.4. While Geralt's fellowship is out searching for her, Ciri has adapted to her new life as a bandit, with a taste for violence and bloodlust clinging to her like a malignant parasite. The penultimate chapter of Geralt's quest to protect Ciri sees the world around him in the middle of an all-out war. Geralt this time around is once again seeking Ciri after the chaotic events in the previous story, now with a ragtag group of companions to accompany him. While this method of writing may be tedious to some, the halfway point for the main saga introduces some of the most unique and interesting characters so far, which is saying something given the already complex people that have already been introduced. Much like Blood of Elves, Baptism of Fire spends a good portion of its time setting up adventures to come.

A more traditional novel with one overarching story, Blood of Elves sees Geralt and Yennefer squabble over the training of young Ciri, whose awesome powers are becoming increasingly difficult to manage. Now is the point where things really start to get rolling in the story of Geralt and Ciri. The concluding story of the novel perfectly sets the stage for the remaining saga to come.
